Learning Piano Incrementally

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

When you are trying to pick up a musical instrument such as piano it is important to realize that it will not happen over night. The focus when you are learning piano should be the basics. The first steps are learning the notes, learning some basic theory of chords, and getting comfortable with the piano and finger position.

Most teachers will recommend that you should create a warm up for your piano playing routine. I usually just play a couple scales and a few chords, then start playing the pieces I am trying to learn. After that I usually mess around playing various fun pieces. Then I try to play the piece I am learning again. This way I do not over-practice something and start making the same mistakes over and over again.

Another thing to think about is how much time you spend actually learning and how much time you spend messing around. If you are too rigid in your studies it might show through, but if you are too lax you will probably never learn the piano

Just remember that you will not learn everything about piano the very first time you try. The name of the game for learning piano is effort over time. If you apply yourself for 15 minutes every day you will probably learn more than if you only play once a week for 2 hours.
